It is day 4 of my 31 day challenge of trying something new everyday. i will continue to say – January is off to a good start because of this challenge.
Today I decided to work in the office. This is something new for me. I usually drag all my materials and spread out on the living room floor & constantly tell Tony to turn down the T.V.
I’m not sure why, but since I completed the office make over, I haven’t felt as comfortable working in there. As much as I hated the old desk and the old look of our office, I think it used to feel cozier. The new color I painted the walls is light, there is usually a draft from the front windows, & I haven’t decided if I like the desk in the middle of the room or pushed up against the far wall, (which is where it is currently sitting). My goal over the next month is to finish this room off with some typography on the walls, a cutely framed cork board above the desk, and a basket with throw blankets to warm it up a bit.
But back to today!
Instead of making a mess and disrupting playoff football, (Tony highly encouraged me to work in the office for this reason!), I grabbed my favorite blanket, plugged in my computer, and dug into my work bag while sitting at the desk in the office.
I am happy to report that I was able to get quite a bit of work done and loved getting rid of the distractions of the living room. I didn’t have Ace staring at me – his tell-tale sign of getting me to move over so he can share my blanket – or Tony trying to start a conversation when I’m trying to figure out the main idea of a nonfiction article about Cane Toads, (yes, this is something we will be reading in my Remedial class this week). I was able to work for most of the afternoon. But even better than be able to work, I was able to focus and take some time into planning more meaningful lessons.
I was happy I stepped out of my routine a bit. It was a good change, (I think for both Tony & I), and I learned how I can best work at home.
Think about how you do your best work? Where are you? What do you need? Try changing it up – unplug from your distractions, overwhelm yourself in doing your best work, & see your successes increase.
