Merry [almost] Christmas ๐
Over the past couple weeks, the holiday craze has set in, both at work and at home. In my classroom, I have been a lion tamer, snapping my whip just enough to keep a classroom full of snarling lions in line. Around this time of year, students seem to think they get a free pass – out of assignments, behavior, you name it. I wish I didn’t have to be the heavy, because they actually are so much fun & make me laugh on a regular basis. But, unfortunately, school has rules & I help make sure they’re being followed [commence the lion taming].
At home, I’ve finally gotten every piece of decor placed, present wrapped, and bow tied. This year, I was a bit behind in #allthethings, which is different for me. In years past, I’ve had all my gift ideas written down by Thanksgiving, & I’ve usually had all presents wrapped by the second week of December. Not to mention, I’ve had all my Christmas decor decorating by Thanksgiving, as well.
But this year… this year, I’ve been a bit slower.
I’ve savored slow weekend nights admiring our twinkling lights in my living room with Tony, sippin’ on a glass of bubbles.
I’ve cared a little less about making sure all presents were wrapped and accounted for before my made-up deadline, weeks before Christmas.
I’ve wrapped myself up in good books on an afternoon we’ve had nothing on the calendar.
& this morning, I’m currently tucked under a warm blanket, listening to the Sufjan Stevens Christmas album, taking in this sweet, easy morning before our first family holiday celebration.
…
But I’m not perfect,
I’ve had to check myself multiple times this week.
With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s easy to forget to take a step back, slow down, and soak in moments that pass by a bit too quickly.
I’ve gotten frustrated with our busy Christmas weekend.
I’ve pouted about not being able to do what I think our Christmas traditions should look like.
I’ve panicked about food prep & having a clean house to host an impromptu Viking’s game party.
I’ve teared up at thinking about yet, another Christmas, without a baby.
…
But then realization hit me.
I’m lucky that I have so many wonderful places to go this weekend, with a table full of warm food, and a roof over our heads.
I’m blessed I have many family Christmas celebrations, with a grandmother and a grandfather still around to share a Merry Christmas hug.
I’m fortunate that I have a stocked frig, of holiday cheer and snacks to fill our bellies.
I’m teary thinking about the love I have from my amazing husband, & the puppy kisses & snuggles I get daily.
…
So I leave you with this:
Drink in the holiday love this weekend,
bathe in the warmth of family and friends,
& be present, wherever you are.
Happy Holidays – xo
