staying positive at work

the in-between

086fb29b9d9a431ca5014604c10e9d7fAre you ever around someone or multiple someones who complain about everything? Are they super negative? How do you handle it?

The past couple months, during my lunch hour, I’ve been staying in my classroom. Since our school is under construction, teachers have been moved around & space has been needed – we have ran out of room to have a staff lounge for lunch breaks [the science teacher needed a room]. So, our team has been eating in a colleagues classroom. The past couple weeks I have stayed in my own classroom to get grading done, have students make up tests, make phone calls, etc…& I have noticed I am much more positive at work. Why? Here’s my theory…

As in any working environment, there are people and places you should steer clear of when wanting to remain positive. In my case- the teacher’s lounge. It’s always a place for [pardon my language] bitching and moaning. Today, I joined my colleagues for lunch for the first time in a while & the second I walked through the classroom door, the negativity overwhelmed me and drowned my hearing. It was constant throughout the entirety, [a whole 15 minutes!] of my lunch. I started my 5th hour class trying to shake out the muck of yuckiness dripping from my ears.

Sometimes, I need reminders on facing the day with a new attitude. I’m no expert, but these three things help me out when it comes to staying positive at work.

3 Ways to Stay Positive at Work: 0b170171d08e72b5ed37dba7a8d10422

1. Steer Clear – Set yourself up for success. If there are certain people that pull you down the road of gossiping, negative thoughts, & they drink your glass so that it is half empty; ditch ’em. Ha! Seriously though, – if there are situations or people you KNOW aren’t positive ones, steer clear. Put yourself in the best position possible at succeeding and feeling good as a professional.

2. Embrace Change – Look at change literally through rose-tinted glasses: how can change help me become better at what I do? Invest your energy in the present & forget about past ways. Welcome change as a challenge, be prepared to work, and watch yourself soar. You’ll be surprised at how many people you’ll attract.

3. Stay Happy – Why waste time complaining on things you can’t control, [come on, Kaylee, really? Take note yourself]. But really, don’t give away your power to those that feed off of muck; keep it, embrace it. Celebrate the success of those around you & take pride your own. Learn from mistakes & use your mind on only productive thoughts.

Happy Thursday – one sleep away from FRIDAY!

Great advice. Sometimes simple solutions give us the biggest pay off.

Teachers can be the worst complainers! I know sometimes you just want to go to the lunchroom, let off steam and tell your “I can’t believe what Johnny did…” story, but it can get to a point where things become very negative! This was definitely something I had to be aware of when I was teaching! Great advice 🙂
